The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Oyo State Chapter, on Monday, joined the global community to celebrate International Youth Day, marked annually on August 12.
This year’s anniversary has the theme: “Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages”.
In a release signed by its Chairperson, Omolola Alamu, Oyo NAWOJ, said the theme resonated deeply with our mission to empower women and amplify the voices of marginalized groups, including young people.
Alamu said: ‘’As we commemorate this day, NAWOJ Oyo State Chapter recognizes the immense potential and creativity of young people in our state. We acknowledge their innovative ideas, energy, and passion for creating positive change. However, we also note the challenges they face, including limited access to education, unemployment, and social inequality’’.
The chairperson called on the Oyo State Government, policymakers, and stakeholders to prioritise youth development and empowerment, adding: ‘’ We urge them to create opportunities for young people to participate in decision-making processes, access quality education, and acquire skills for the future’’.
Continuing, Alamu said: ‘’As women journalists, we commit to amplifying the stories and voices of young people in Oyo State, highlighting their achievements, and holding leaders accountable for their promises’’.
Oyo NAWAOJ also announced its plans to organise a mentorship programme for young female journalists in the state to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the media industry.
