As part of efforts to create better coordination and prevent future disputes, the Oluyole Local Government (LG) has announced plans to create a comprehensive database of farmers and herders within the council area.

This decision follows a roundtable discussion convened by the executive chairman of the local government, Engr Akeem Olatunji, to address grievances aired by farmers from Oja-Ibadan.

The controversy arose when a group of farmers, led by Destiny Aigbe, visited a local radio station to express their concerns regarding land use.

Their move prompted the Executive Chairman of Oluyole LG, Engr. Olatunji, to engage stakeholders in a dialogue to clarify the situation.

During the meeting held in his office at the LG Secretariat, Idi-Ayunre on Monday, January 27, Engr. Olatunji explained that the land in question is a designated tree-planting reserve under the management of agro rangers, making any farming activities there unauthorized.

He stated that the local government was previously unaware of any farming activities in the area and reiterated that such usage is illegal.

While assuring farmers of the his administration’s dedication and commitment to economic development through agricultural revolution in Oluyole, Olatunji reiterated his zero tolerance for any form of illegality and urged stakeholders to always use the appropriate government channels to assess whatever they want.

Earlier, Chief Mrs. Gafari Omolara, Iyaloja of Oluyole LG, criticized the farmers’ decision to go to the media before engaging the council or security agencies. She stressed that proper communication channels should have been followed instead attempting to escalate the situation out of proportion to project government in bad light.

Reinforcing her position, the Baale of Oja-Ibadan, Chief Kamorudeen Adeagbo, emphasized the importance of due process in resolving disputes. He urged the farmers to seek dialogue with relevant authorities before escalating matters publicly, saying such action could stray mutual trust between government and the people.

Similarly, Mr. Kehinde Oluwasakin, Chairman of the Cassava Growers Association in Oluyole local government, commended the Executive Chairman for handling the situation calmly and constructively. He appreciated the efforts made to mediate the issue and ensure peaceful resolution.

In her response, Destiny Aigbe, leader of the farmers, however, appealed for understanding and cooperation from all parties, including the Chairman, security agencies, and other stakeholders.

Similarly, another farmer, Mrs. Gloria Fakayode, acknowledged the mistake they made in their approach and expressed gratitude to the Chairman and security agencies for their prompt intervention.

As a proactive measure to prevent further conflicts, Engr. has proposed the registration of all farmers and herders within Oluyole LG for proper coordination especially as a new farming season approaches.

He equally encouraged them to form associations and cluster groups to facilitate identification, coordination, and conflict resolution as well as easy access to government intervention and support programs.
