The Chairman of the Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), Alhaji Babalola Afobaje, today marked his one-year anniversary in office, highlighting a year of significant strides in rural water access, sanitation, and hygiene promotion across the state.
The Chairman, has expressed his sincere appreciation to the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Oluseyi Makinde, for entrusting him with the leadership of the agency under his administration.
Alhaji Afobaje reflected on his vision, progress, and plans for the future. Since assuming office in May 2024, the agency under his leadership has commissioned 10 rural water supply projects, including solar-powered boreholes, rehabilitated hand pump systems, and 10 toilets facilities and hygiene awareness campaigns in partnership with local communities and stakeholders.
“It has been a year of significant achievements and valuable lessons” said Alhaji Afobaje. “Our focus has been on increasing access to safe water, improving sanitation, and building strong community ownership to ensure sustainability”
RUWASSA’s approach centers on community participation, with the establishment of water user associations and local management committees to ensure the long-term functionality of water infrastructure.
Despite challenges such as funding constraints and access to remote communities, the agency has worked around the clock to reach underserved areas, with a commitment to equity and public health.
“We are committed to making clean water and sanitation a reality for every rural household in Oyo State. With the support of our partners, communities and government, the future looks promising, the Chairman added.
RUWASSA plans to expand into more Local Government Areas (LGAs), leverage digital tools for project monitoring, and strengthen collaborations with development partners.
The anniversary comes as RUWASSA continues to align its efforts with national and international goals, including Nigeria’s Vision 2030 for water access and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6).
The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) is responsible for improving water supply and sanitation services in rural areas of Oyo State. The agency partners with communities, development partners, and local governments to deliver sustainable and inclusive water solutions.
